Arab American feminist poet to speak on campus April 13
DEARBORN---Renowned Arab American feminist poet Mohja Kahf, professor
of comparative literature at the University of Arkansas, and co-founder
of Muslimswakeup.com, will present "The Sweetness of (Written) Intercourse"
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 13 in Room 1030 of the College of
Arts, Sciences, and Letters Building at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a poetry
and prose reading by Kahf at 6:45 p.m. and conversation at 7:45 p.m. The
event will conclude with a book signing at 8:45 p.m.
A founding member of the Radius of Arab American Writers, Kahf is the
author of numerous works, including The Sweetness of (Written) Intercourse;
The Girl in the Tangerine Scarf; Emails from Scheherazad;
and Western Representations of the Muslim Women. Her poetry has
appeared in several journals, including Azizah; Banipal: A Magazine
of Modern Arabic Literature; The Paris Review; The Paterson
Review; and Mizna.
The talk, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Arab and
Arab American Writer's Series organized by UM-Dearborn's Center for Arab
American Studies.
Kahf's talk is sponsored by Ned Fawaz of Energy International and a Distinguished
Faculty and Graduate Student Seminar Grant from the Office of the Vice
President for Research at U-M. The event is co-sponsored by UM-Dearborn's
Women's and Gender Studies Program.
