Welcome!
Would you like to better understand the relationship between self and society? Know how environmental and technological changes are affecting your everyday life? Engage with issues of gender and identity formation? Study life and literature of ancient Greece? Explore the intersection of literature and science, or the nature of memory? The MALS program at the University of Michigan-Dearborn offers students the opportunity to explore these questions and many more in a wide range of courses not typically available in traditional graduate programs. Using an interdisciplinary approach, students in MALS can study topics of historical and contemporary concern utilizing perspectives from a variety of different fields within and across the natural sciences, humanities, behavioral sciences and social sciences.
The MALS curriculum is designed specifically for adult, part-time students interested in continuing intellectual growth. The structure of the program is flexible enough to meet a variety of personal and professional goals. The courses foster critical thinking and encourage students to develop creative, transdisciplinary approaches to problems and issues. In the MALS program, students also have the opportunity to hone professional, academic, and creative writing skills. It also provides numerous opportunities to improve oral communication skills. The small seminar setting (12-14 students) creates space for intensive discussion and dialogue, and students also have the opportunity to present their research in a public forum.
The program consists of a minimum of 30-credit hours of course work. To accommodate full-time workers, required classes are offered primarily in the evening.
The MALS program is a full member of the Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Programs (AGLSP)
