Graduate ProgramsMaster of Arts in Liberal Studies

Admissions

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Evidence of strong academic skills. This will be determined from an examination of the required Official Transcript from the institution of higher education awarded the applicant's Bachelor degree. The applicant's undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) must be a minimum of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered for admission on a probationary basis.
  • The applicant's Statement of Purpose in seeking admission to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree program. This will be assessed to determine the applicant's appropriateness for admission into the program and, equally, the program's appropriateness to the applicant's purposes and goals in seeking a higher degree.
  • The applicant's Writing Sample that demonstrates critical and analytical thinking and writing skills. This may be a composition that the applicant has previously produced, perhaps for an undergraduate course, in the context of the applicant's employment, or for any other purpose, or it may be produced for purposes of the application to the MALS program. It should have a clearly articulated thesis and well-developed supporting arguments.
  • An interview of the applicant by the MALS program director. This will afford a final opportunity for the assessment of the application requirements listed above and as such is a crucial element in the determination of the applicant's admissibility.
  • Letters of recommendation or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are not required.

This program is approved by the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan and embodies the academic standards appropriate to programs at the University of Michigan.
