All Students
All CASL ONLINE course require students to use a computer. The computer configuration needed is listed below. You will also need:
- An Internet browser, such as a recent version of Internet Explorer, Mozilla/Foxfire, or Netscape installed on your computer.
- Software download ad-ins including Adobe Reader and ,depending on the format of the media for your instructor's lectures, one or more of the following: QuickTime, iTunes, or Flash. You may download these from the Internet via these links. The first time that you access iTunesU from a course, you will automatically be asked to download and install iTunes, if it is not already on your computer, and you will be directed to the source.
- Your University of Michigan Kerberos password to access the course software system - CTools.
- Your email address aligned with your uniqname and your umich email address - follow these instructions.Once you are using CTools, if you are not receiving email from CTools, it may be because your uniqname and email address are not linked. Be sure that you have followed these instructions and be sure that you have checked the spam blocker in your email software. If you are still not receiving email from CTools, contact
The computer configuration that we recommend that you should have:
- IBM Compatible Desktop or Laptop with

- Windows XP Operating System (XP still works best with CTools; Vista will work in most cases. If you have difficulties with Vista, contact CTools Technical Support - see the contact information in the left column.)
- Pentium Processor or better
- At Least 128 MB Memory (better with more)
- Color Monitor Display
- At least 20 GB Hard Drive
- Other Drives (Especially needed if you do not have high speed Internet access.)

- CD-ROM Drive may be needed in some cases
- DVD Drive may be needed in some cases
- SoundBlaster compatible sound card (speakers and headphones)
- CABLE or other Broadband Internet access. Many course lectures are in video and audio formats that take too long to download over a dial up modem.
If you do not have a computer capable of working with CTools and the online media needed for the course, you may need to come to one of the campus computer labs or an off campus computer lab (at a library, Internet cafe, etc.)
