Political Science Students: Don’t Forget to Apply for the John Dempsey Memorial Scholarship:
This scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Dempsey, a former professor of political science at UM-D who also served as Director of Budget for the State of Michigan and Director of the Michigan Department of Social Services. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours and be enrolled full-time (12 credits) in a political science program. Students interested in competing for the Dempsey Scholarship should contact the financial aid office.
Faculty to Present Research at Social Science Colloquia:
The Social Science Department’s Fall 2009 Research Colloquia series will highlight research by three political science faculty. On October 27th, Dr. Dale Thomson, will present “From Grants to Governance: The Evolving Role of Grantors’ Performance Requirements on Nonprofit Operations.” Dr. Trevor Thrall will present “Facts, Frames and Fancies: Crafted Talk and the Limits of Threat Inflation” on November 24th. Dr. Lara Rusch will wind up the series on December 15th when she presents her outcome evaluation of Habitat for Humanity’s work in Detroit. All presentations will be held from 12 to 1:00 p.m. in the Social Sciences Building.

Assistant Professor of Political Science, Dr. Dale Thomson appeared with faculty colleague Tim Kiska and Director of ARISE Detroit Luther Keith on Channel 7’s Spotlight on the Media. Dr. Thomson discussed City of Detroit’s primary elections for City Council and Charter Review Commission and highlighted the Institute for Local Government’s collaboration with media, education, and nonprofit partners to provide video interviews of candidates to voters on mivote.org.
