On the Move: College is an Option is a college access workshop hosted by the University of Michigan-Dearborn. This day-long workshop, now in its 17th year, introduces adults in the metropolitan area facing socioeconomic challenges to a variety of postsecondary education options, including the CASL SOAR program. In addition to UM-Dearborn, several local universities and community colleges participate in the workshop which is sponsored in part by the Office of the Provost, the Commission for Women, and the American Association of University Women, Dearborn.
The free workshop is open to all individuals in our metropolitan area who have experienced barriers to education and are interested in beginning or returning to school. During the event, participants will attend a college course; sit in on a panel discussion of returning students who share the challenges and rewards of being a non-traditional student; listen to motivational speakers who have overcome obstacles and achieved success through education; and, receive information about admissions, registration, and financial aid processes applicable to most universities and community colleges. Small groups of participants are assigned a mentor who travels with them throughout the day.
