Aurora Harris, a new UM-Dearborn lecturer in English, has just been named the recipient of the 2012 PEN Oakland-Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature for her poetry collection Solitude of Five Black Moons. The partially autobiographical book covers such subjects as African American and Filipino cultures, jazz, women, and nature. It is co-published by Broadside Press and University of Detroit-Mercy Press.

Professor Harris is currently teaching Introduction to African American Literature and Twentieth/Twenty-first Century African American Literature, courses crosslisted with English and African & African American Studies. She will receive the coveted prize at an award ceremony in December.
