American Studies

American Studies examines the core values and ideas that define American culture, while at the same time emphasizing the diversity of those cultural expressions in past and contemporary times. American Studies draws upon the content of several disciplines and capitalizes also on the interdisciplinary content already common in courses offered on campus under English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology and other disciplines. The American Studies curriculum focuses on four themes: American Identities; Work, Technology, and Globalization; Literature, Arts, and Culture; and Society, Religion, and Politics. Students in American Studies will gain not only a deeper understanding of their own culture, but an appreciation for the challenges involved in the understanding of any culture.
