All Students
All CASL ONLINE courses require students to use a computer. The technical requirements for the computer include:
- An Internet browser. Firefox is recomended by CTools support
- Free Software download ad-ins. These include Adobe Reader and ,depending on the format of the media for your instructor's lectures, one or more of the following: QuickTime, iTunes, or Flash. You may download these from the Internet via these links. Just follow the instillation instructions to install each of the required programs
With the iTunes program, the first time that you access iTunesU from a course, you will automatically be asked to download and install iTunes if it is not already on your computer, and you will be directed to the source. - Your University of Michigan Kerberos password to access the course software system, CToolshttp://ctools.umich.edu/.
This is not always the same as your UM Dearborn password. If you are not able to log in with what you believe to be your Kerberos password, you can go to the ITS web site that handles this, http://www.its.umd.umich.edu/accounts-passwords/ for more information on retreiving and changing passwords - Your University Of Michigan Dearborn email address is crucial. This is how Instructors, CTools, and the campus in general will attempt to contact you.
- Your email address must be linked with your uniqname and your umich email address. This is normally automatic, but if you are not receiving email from CTools, it may be because your uniqname and email address are not linked. Follow these instructions to update your directory listing. If you continue to have difficulty receiving emails from CTools, be sure to check the spam blocker in your email software. If you are still not receiving email from CTools, contact CTools support (see left menu)
Common Question: I'm a UM-Dearborn student and I can't log in -- why isn't my password working?
At UM-Dearborn, you are issued multiple passwords, depending on the types of access requested. Passwords are required to prove (or "authenticate") your access to many University computer systems. Password security is very important! Do not share your password with anyone. You can be held responsible for actions taken by someone else if they use your account to access University systems.
LDAP -- This is the password used for accessing primary systems on the UM-Dearborn campus. You need your LDAP password when logging into:
1. Campus Email
2. Webmail
3. ITS computer labs
4. Novell file sharing
5. Unix home directories
Kerberos -- Your kerberos password is used to access many University systems in Ann Arbor. You need your kerberos password when logging into:
1. Wolverine Access
2. CTools
3. MichNet dial-in lines
4. UM Marketplace (buy, sell, trade)
Banner -- employees who use the Banner student information system are issued a password for accessing data. NOTE: Banner passwords are issued by the ITS Student Information Systems team. Requests can be submitted to telstarreq@umd.umich.edu.
Student Self Service -- students and faculty login to UM-Dearborn's online student self service site for applications, registration, payments, grades, scheduling, etc. You will need your uniqname and PIN number.
NOTE: PIN numbers are obtained through the Registrar's Office.
Kerberos and LDAP passwords will not be changed or reset without personal, University of Michigan identification. Users who wish to have passwords reset must come to the Computer Wing in person and provide valid University identification in the form ofreset. All passwords can be changed in the ITS Accounts Office during normal business hours. If the Accounts Office is closed, users can use one of the many password reset stations on campus.
