"Since graduating from the U of M program in 2002, I have not only been able to use my Spanish skills in my own classroom at Allen Park High School, but have found many opportunites to use it here in Metro Detroit.  I don't think some people realize that only 20 minutes away we have a population of Spanish speakers who not only need help, but also have so much to offer us.  Two years ago I worked for LA SED (Latin Americans for Social and Economic Development) and helped organize a week-long dentist program for children without insurance in the area.  In this last year, my church has been able to become involved in a ministry program at the Vinewood Church of Christ.  This program offers free English classes to locals in the area.  Because of my Spanish skills I have been asked to not only teach a few classes myself, but act as an intermediary between the two churches.  I have built relationships with the people in the program and continue to build on my Spanish skills with native speakers.  There are so many opportunites that we have at our doorstep, it's just a matter of making an effort to find them. "

Natalie Parker (2003) writes ... 
"After doing my student teaching, I tried to find a job as a teacher. However, a different job opportunity fell in my lap through a contact I had made at the Latin club I used to go to in college with another life long friend I met through another Spanish contact I had met just because I loved SPANISH! The job was for a trainer to travel to Mexico, spending 80% of the year there training Ford's plant workers how to use newly developed, newly released and enhanced software that runs the various plant operations, i.e. machine maintenance, medical clinics reporting, etc. Perfect! It used my Spanish and my teaching background. In the end, the project got cancelled before I even left Dearborn but I ended up using my Spanish in other capacities. I worked as an interpreter, translated operations manuals, user guides, websites, application screens, etc. into Spanish. I also used it to manage and coordinate the implementation of software in Argentina, Mexico, Spain and Venezuela along with other places in the world. Outside of Ford, I have done a translation of a divorce settlement, an affidavit, and other legal documents for the Courts of the Dominican Republic. I did the translation of materials for a radio broadcast for Radio Euskadi, one of Spain's national radio stations. I have even had my own translation business. Spanish has been a huge part of my life. After writing this, and still leaving a lot out, I realize maybe that is why my drive to take Spanish has always been so great. It really has taken me to where I am in life and has really given me a lot outside of what I ever dreamed or planned."
