Message from the Chair

Dear Colleagues,

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Faculty Senate is a part of long tradition of shared governance at the University of Michigan. The Senate derives its power from Regent’s Bylaws, which define its role and purpose. The primary functions of the Senate are to act as a conduit between faculty and administration and to articulate faculty’s perspectives on all matters pertaining to the interest of the University.

Through various committees, the Senate addresses many important routine issues such as tenure and promotion recommendations, research and scholarship matters, economic status of the faculty, online evaluation of administrators, etc. In addition, the Senate addresses many new issues every year. Following is a list of current issues being considered at the Faculty Senate this year:
  • Periodic Evaluation of Chancellor
  • Provost Search Process
  • Senate’s Role in Shared Governance
  • Faculty Engagement Issues
  • Enrollment and Retention Issues
  • Graduate Education and Structure
  • Distance Learning Education and Structure
  • Budget Matters
If you have any comments on these or any other issues, please feel free to contact your faculty representative, Senate secretary or me. You are also welcome to attend Faculty Senate meetings, which are open to all faculty and public. Please keep in touch and get involved. The strength of Faculty Senate greatly depends on the level of your involvement.

Sincerely,

Tariq Shamim, Chair
UM-D Faculty Senate
