Special Programs
UM-Dearborn has a distinct mission to integrate, research and service for the benefit of the people of southeastern Michigan. UM-Dearborn's proposal addresses three topics around which difficult dialogues regularly emerge on campus.
First Year Seminars help students see beyond grades, credits, and careers, important as they are, to the precious opportunity a university offers to explore the life of the mind, to reflect more consciously and critically about important ideas, and to think and write more thoughtfully.
The Honors Program at UM-Dearborn is designed for qualified, highly-motivated students who want an extra level of challenge and stimulus in their college experience.
The MURF is a showcase of student research projects held each March at the State Capitol in Lansing. Five universities participate -- UM-Dearborn, UM-Ann Arbor, UM-Flint, Wayne State, and Michigan State--with each school sponsoring up to ten of its students.
Retired Persons Scholarship Program (RPSP) offers retirees the opportunity to attend classes alongside traditional-aged undergraduates. This integration of younger students and older students into the mainstream academic curriculum bridges the generation gap.
CASL SOAR program seeks to encourage socially and economically disadvantaged women from the metropolitan community to attend The University of Michigan-Dearborn. The program provides reduced tuition, mentoring, book subsidy and academic/ personal support.
The Women in Learning and Leadership (WILL) program is designed to develop the analytical abilities and skills of undergraduate women and promote their will to be community leaders.
A College-Wide in CASL, the Writing Program offers a range of courses and academic support to undergraduate and graduate students across the university. Among other projects and initiatives, the Writing Program oversees the UM-D Writing Center, the campus Writing Awards competition, and the Composition Placement Examination.
