Science and Technology Studies
Launched in 2002, the University of Michigan-Dearborn's Program in Science and Technology Studies (STS) offers students a comprehensive look at the relationship between science/technology and society while also providing special attention to the impact of the automobile and automobile industry on American culture. The Program's curriculum consists of an introductory course, STS 300 (Introduction to Science and Technology Studies), and three groups of upper-level course offerings on "Science, Technology, and Cultures," "Science, Technology, and Labor," and "Science, Technology, and Environments." Many of the Program's courses, including the introductory one, contain at least some focus on the automobile, but students are also able to study a variety of other topics, from environmental ethics to the legal and political issues raised by the internet to women and science.
An undergraduate minor in STS is currently available to students in all academic units. For students pursuing the Bachelor of General Studies degree, STS can be selected as an area of focus. STS courses also meet distribution requirements in the humanities and social and behavioral science for students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. With five STS courses offered in distance learning formats, both the minor and the area of focus can be obtained online.
