Program Requirements
To receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in the Biochemistry Program, students must complete prerequisite and concentration requirements in Biochemistry in addition to the distribution and graduation requirements of the College.
CASL Distribution and Graduation Requirements
The CASL distribution requirements may be obtained through the CASL Office of Advising and Student Records. Courses used to satisfy distribution requirements may not be used to satisfy concentration requirements. Upon reaching 85 credit hours a CASL student should automatically receive a senior audit from the CASL Office of Advising and Student Records. Once the audit has been received the student should meet with his/her faculty advisor to review the audit.
The CASL graduation requirements include:
- a minimum of 120 credit hours of courses with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or better.
- a minimum of a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all upper division courses in biochemistry, biological sciences and chemistry.
- a minimum of 48 credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 300 or above).
- permit a maximum of 65 credit hours total of courses in biochemistry, biological sciences or chemistry.
(This is in lieu of a maximum of 44 credit hours of courses in any one subject area.)
Prerequisites (44 credit hours)
The following courses or their equivalents.
- Biological Sciences 130 and 140 (8 credit hours)
- Chemistry 134/136 or 134/146, 225, 226, 227 (16 credit hours)
- Mathematics 115, 116 (8 credit hours)
- Physics 125 + 126 or 150 + 151 (8 credit hours)
Premedical students are advised to take Physics 125+126.
Concentration Requirements
(minimum 30 credit hours)
- Biochemistry (13 credit hours).
470 Biochemistry I(3 credit hours)
471 Biochemistry II(3 credit hours)
472 Biochemistry Lab I(1 credit hour)
473 Biochemistry Lab II(1 credit hour)
474 Molecular Biology(4 credit hours)
497 Biochemistry Seminar(1 credit hour) - Chemistry (7 credit hours).
344 Quantitative Analysis(4 credit hours)
368 Physical Chemistry I(3 credit hours) - Related Sciences (10 credit hours). A minimum of three credits must be chosen from group 2. Other related courses may be substituted only with prior approval of program advisor.
Group 1: (7 credit minimum)
Upper division courses in Biochemistry, Biology or Chemistry. At least one credit must be in laboratory.
Group 2: Computational Skills: (3 credit minimum)
An upper level course in mathematics, statistics or computer science.
Biochemistry Electives
(maximum 14 credit hours)
Students may not apply more than 14 additional credit hours of upper division courses offered in biochemistry, biological sciences or chemistry for satisfying graduation requirements. A maximum of 6 credit hours in Biochemistry 495, 498 and 499 may be applied to the 120 credit hours required for graduation.
