Spanish
ˇBienvenidos!
Spanish is the native language of some 300,000,000 persons who live in Spain, Mexico and eighteen other countries of the Caribbean, Central and South America. In addition, there are some 36,000,000 native Spanish-speakers in the United States. Of the thousands of languages in the world today, Spanish ranks among the top five in the number of speakers. Thus, the study of the Spanish language and its culture is quite practical. Given the Hispanic presence in the United States and the proximity of our Spanish-speaking neighbors in Latin America, proficiency in Spanish is increasingly advantageous and even necessary for numerous professions and careers.
The Spanish area faculty members recognize the need to provide today's students with a broad education and perspective. To that end the Spanish area offers three different concentrations (majors) as well as a minor. The three concentrations are:
- Hispanic Studies
- International Studies-Spanish
- a Certification Program for teaching grades 7-12
