Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy
Any member of the philosophy faculty will be glad to help you plan a philosophy major or minor or discuss your plans and answer your questions. If you decide to become a philosophy major, we will assign a faculty member to work with you as your official advisor.
Required Courses
Students wishing to major in philosophy must complete the following courses:
- Philosophy 100: Introduction to Philosophy
- Philosophy 233: Critical Thinking or Philosophy 234: Symbolic Logic
- Philosophy 240: Ethics
- Philosophy 301: Ancient Philosophy
- Philosophy 302: Modern Philosophy
Additional Required Courses: Alternative I / II
Although all philosophy majors must complete the above courses, additional requirements depend upon the students' choosing between a traditional program (Alternative I) and a program that emphasizes the relationship between philosophy and other areas of study (Alternative II).
- Alternative I requires a total of 24 hours in philosophy at the 300 level or above and 6 hours of upper division cognate courses in one or more disciplines outside philosophy.
- Alternative II requires a total of 18 hours in philosophy at the 300 level or above and 12 hours of upper division cognate courses. Cognate courses require the approval of your program advisor.
Satisfactory completion of Philosophy 301 and 302 may be counted as part of the 24 hours in philosophy in Alternative I or the 18 hours in philosophy in Alternative II. A double concentration (philosophy plus another area) is also possible; see your philosophy program advisor.
Minor in Philosophy
A philosophy minor consists of any four upper-division philosophy courses.
