Chemistry concentrators must complete 24 credit hours of courses offered by the Departments of Behavioral Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities (including the credit hours for English Composition and those for courses in foreign languages offered by the Humanities Department). This requirement can be and usually is fulfilled by completion of the CASL distribution requirements.
The study of a foreign language is recommended for all chemistry concentrators, particularly students who plan to continue their studies in chemistry at the graduate level. Most graduate schools require a foreign language for an advanced degree; German, French, Japanese or Russian are usually preferred. Also strongly recommended for any chemistry student are one or more courses in computer science. To graduate, all students must successfully complete a total of at least 120 credit hours, including a minimum of 48 credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 300 and above). Note that completion of the upper-level requirements for the chemistry concentration requires 35 credit hours of course work (28 credit hours - required, 1 credit hour - elective, and 6 credit hours - cognate). An additional 14 credit hours of upper division elective course work must be completed to reach the 48 credit hours specified by CASL. No more than 44 credit hours of chemistry, excluding Chem 124 and 136 or 146, Chem 225, 226 and 227 may be applied toward the total of 120 credit hours needed for graduation.
Upon reaching 85 credit hours a CASL student should automatically receive a senior audit from the CASL Office of Advising and Student Records. Once the audit has been received the student should meet with the chemistry concentration advisor to review the audit.
